CEBIB Students participated in the 7th Annual Biosafety Conference 2018

Four (4) Centre of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (CEBIB) graduate students namely, Temitope Arinola, Easter Syombua, Abneel Kaur, and Accadius Lunayo participated in this year’s 7th Annual Biosafety Pre-conferences courses held from the 14th to 15th August 2018 at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.

The Pre-Conference Training courses focused on Biosafety at the Graduate level so that the young upcoming scientists would be able to take part, and learn about the importance of Biosafety Regulations in regard to the introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the Kenya. The training included:

  • Food and feed safety assessment of GMOs
  • Emerging technologies for gene manipulation and CRISPR training
  • Role of Bioinformatics in risk assessment of GMOs
  • Regulatory Compliance from Laboratory to Confined Field Trials- Biological and Physical Containment, Genetic and Material Confinement
  • Post- Commercialization Monitoring and Biotechnology and Biotechnology Product Stewardship
  • Biotechnology and Biosafety Communication.

Several organizations came together to sponsor this event: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Research Fund (NRF), African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), DUPONT PIONEER, NEPAD, African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ABNE), among many others.

At the end of it, it was a success and we look forward to the conference next year.
