CEBIB Doctoral student explores application of CRISPR/cas9 in yam genome editing

In this week’s CEBIB Journal session, CEBIB postgraduates had the opportunity to interact with Ms. Easter Syombua, CEBIB PhD (Biotechnology) student. Ms. Syombua is pursuing her research at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Kenya. The project aims at establishing a genome editing Toolkit in yams using the clustered regularly interspersed short palindromic repeats (CRISPR/cas) system. The tool has the potential to improve food crops by addressing challenges associated with polyploidy, dioecious nature, poor seed set, heterozygosity, and a prolonged breeding cycle. Targeted genome editing strategies such as CRISPR/cas9 system have proven that sequence-specific nucleases are effective tools that can be applied in gene function analysis and crop improvement strategies. The contribution of the technology towards the realization of food security is a broad field that Biotechnologists such as Easter are exploring.
