Mr. Willingtone Odhiambo gives a presentation at a workshop held on October 27, 2015 at the Nairobi Surgical Centre, Chiromo Campus. Mr. Odhiambo, holding linear cutter staplers used for bowel resection, and anastomoses, explains to the participants how medical devices interact with the living tissues during surgery. Medical devices featured include sutures, titanium staples, implants and energy platforms such as ultrasonic machines, diathermy amongst others.

The workshop theme was ‘Science of Tissue Management during Surgery’. It was organised by Johnson and Johnson Professional Educational. The event targeted consultant general surgeons from Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa and Nairobi. The workshop was facilitated to encourage the adoption of technology during surgery and improvement of patient health.

The administration of antibiotics orally or by injection for either prophylaxis or cures or both has facilitated successful management of bacterial infections. The efficacy of these diagnosis is dependent on judicious and appropriate administration otherwise may be residual in milk, meat and other edible animal products. Compliance to the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is crucial to avoid recurrent cases of multidrug resistance as well as allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

This study proposes to determine the relative contribution by individual livestock trypanocidal drugs to the prevalence of trypanosome multi-drug resistance; and attempts to provide viable targets for the development of variant specific diagnostic tools. Most veterinary trypanocides rely on particular cellular import transporters for their uptake and certain loss of function mutations in these regions have been associated with drug resistance in African trypanosomes.

On 30th November - 5th December, 2015 CEBIB Lecturer and students attended a “Bioinformatics approaches for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)” course hosted at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE). The course was organized by ICIPE and TReND (Teaching and Research in Natural Sciences for Development in Africa) volunteers and comprised of participants from 45 universities across Africa. NGS analysis topics including de novo genome and transcriptome assembly, ChIP-seq and RNA-seq, rare variant calling and population genetics were taught. Other topics included introduction to R statistical programming language and software development concepts such as databases and version control. The main focus was on the use of freely available data and open source technologies, and encouraging open reproducible research. More information on the annual short course is available at;
