Brenda Makena, a 2nd year MSc Bioinformatics student from the University of Nairobi’s Centre for Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (CEBIB) has been selected for 3 months all-expenses-paid research students exchange programme. Brenda is among nine students competitively selected for the programme from various institutions of higher learning in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Sudan, and Cameroon. The programme, funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), is aimed at strengthening capacity at the beginning of the student’s research careers.

Brenda’s training at the University of Glasgow’s Wellcome Centre for Molecular Parasitology will majorly focus on research and lab techniques in parasitology. “A very wonderful opportunity to train under and be mentored by great scientists,” Brenda posted on her twitter handle. She intends to complete the programme as she explores for Doctoral opportunities. She conducted her current MSc research titled ‘Genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum parasites in pregnant and non-pregnant women and potential resistance to antimalarial drugs in Kenya’, under the supervision of Dr. Victor Mobegi (Dept. of Biochemistry, University of Nairobi), Dr. George Obiero (CEBIB, University of Nairobi), and Dr. Ben Andagalu (Malaria Drug Resistance Lab, US Army Medical Research Directorate Kenya).

CEBIB fraternity congratulates Brenda and wishes her all the best in her scholarly pursuit!
