CEBIB post-graduates participate in problem-based Learning program at C4D Lab

Three (3) post-graduates from the Centre for Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (CEBIB) have been selected among other learners to participate in the problem-based Learning (PBL) program hosted at Computing for Development (C4D) lab. On 22nd - 24th October 2019, Ms. Sonia Barasa, Mr. Gitau John and Mr. Nehemiah Ongeso had attended a three-day orientation at the CD4 lab based at the School of Computing and Informatics, University of Nairobi.

The Director C4D lab, Dr. Tonny Omwansa, congratulated the participants for being selected. The collaborative PBL program is aimed at engaging learners to use innovation in a multi-disciplinary approach to tackling real-world challenges with the support of mentors and academia-industry linkages. Keynote speeches were given by Dr. Steve Litchy from Institute of Development Impact (I4DI), UK. Dr. Litchy, a design, evaluation, and research expert, emphasized on effective tools and methods to utilize for innovation and creativity as well as the importance of having an innovative mindset. Dr. Peter Oketch from Department of Physics, University of Nairobi explained about design thinking process as a methodology to solve complex problems. He pointed out methodologies such as empathizing, defining the problem, ideating, prototyping and testing.  Furthermore, Dr. Oketch enlightened the learners on the 4C’s skills (communication, creativity, creative thinking and collaboration) required to be successful in the 21st century. Dr. Sam Ruhiu from School of Computing and Informatics, University of Nairobi, engaged the learners on team formation process (forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning) and how to effectively complete a task while working in teams.
