The 2-days Workshop focused on principles of molecular epidemiology, criteria for selection of genotyping methods for epidemiology and highlights of core molecular methods. The guest speaker Prof. Wondwossen A. Gebreyes - Director of Global Health/Professor of Molecular Epidemiology - Ohio State University also engaged the participants in discussions on genotypic approaches used in epidemiologic investigation of pathogen in human, animal and environment interface (vector-borne, foodborne and other zoonotic diseases).
In-depth discussions on Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE), Multi-Locus Sequence typing (MLST), Spoligotyping, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) were conducted. There was a review on the use of these techniques in studying Methicilin resistant Staphylococcus aureas and Clostridium difficile. The students had an interactive session moderated by Prof. Samuel E. Aggrey (University of Georgia, Department of Poultry) and Prof. Romdhane Rekaya (University of Georgia, Department of Animal and Dairy science) on how to improve chicken and cattle breed in Africa through cross breeding without carrying out gene manipulation.
